What About the Simple Life?

Blogs - What About the Simple Life?

I’d like to welcome my online author friend, Yvonne Morgan, for my February family story. As an author, Yvonne takes her readers on a journey of faith, hope, and love with encouraging words. I think you’ll enjoy her nostalgic memories visiting her grandmother in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. Welcome, Yvonne!

A Simple Belfast Life

I moved from Belfast as a baby, but I still visit Northern Ireland often. I have many cherished memories from those visits, especially at my grandmother’s house. My nanny lived in a row house near the city center for almost sixty years. The house was simple and lacked modern conveniences. Join me in a walk down memory lane.

Nanny’s house had a very simple electrical system with a meter fixed to the wall which needed a shilling coin to operate. When she noticed the lights dimming, Nanny grabbed a coin from the jar atop the dusty mantel to feed the meter and then we waited for the lights to flicker back to life. This type of system eliminated the need for an electric bill, but needed a constant supply of coins.

The house’s plumbing was basic, featuring a single toilet in the garden. To reach the toilet, we braved the elements as we ventured into the yard, as the crunch of dry leaves under our feet echoed in the silence. The only exception came at night, when we resorted to a pot stashed under the creaky bed, filled with Pine-Sol. The strong, nostalgic scent of Pine-Sol wafted through the air, and still transports me back to those days.

Nanny’s house lacked hot water. We heated water for bathing on the stove. Bath time started with a large, worn-out metal tub fetched from under the creaking stairs. Nanny set it up in the cozy, dimly lit kitchen. The persistent hiss and sizzle of water boiling on the stove echoed through the house. As the tub filled, steam rose, carrying the familiar scent of soap into the air. Everyone bathed in the same water, which caused the thin layer of soap scum to cling to our skin. After the bath, with chattering teeth and damp skin, I made my way to the crackling fireplace, feeling the warmth radiate over my shivering body, providing a comforting respite from the chilly aftermath of the bath.

I can still recall the rhythmic clip-clop of the horse-drawn milk cart, the steady beat echoing through the air. The sound of the glass bottles clinking together filled the streets as the cart bounced over the rough cobblestones. Every morning, Nanny instructed me to snatch the bottle from the front stoop swiftly to keep the birds from piercing the tin top so they could savor the cream.

In the absence of a refrigerator, Nanny stored the fragile milk under the cool shade of the dining room table. And to ensure minimal waste, Nanny meticulously bought just enough food for the day, seeking the freshest ingredients from the nearby greengrocer and butchers. The tantalizing smell of the produce, vibrant and earthy, permeated the kitchen, enticing the senses and promising flavorful meals to come.

I miss my nanny a lot. However, I will always cherish the wonderful memories we made together. Nowadays, modern comforts make life easier. But living simply allowed for more meaningful connections.

Beautiful story which reminds me of my own experiences of growing up in a small farmhouse in South Georgia. The lack of conveniences didn’t diminish the love nor the fun!
